Agile UML Modeling in JDeveloper -
Uploaded on September 08, 2010
The presenter first examines how UML class modeling tools substitute, more than adequately, for traditional ERD logical data models, both in capturing semantics and in transforming them into database designs. He then explores how other core UML models (Use Case, Sequence, and Activity) interact to provide a lightweight, but effective, framework for application development. This presentation demonstrates the techniques, extensively, using JDeveloper R11 UML2 modeling tools.

All About Binds -
Uploaded on July 27, 2011
This session will briefly overview why binding is extremely important with regards to performance, scalability, and even security, but quickly move into topics such as: Do I always want to bind? (Surprisingly, the answer is no.) What is bind variable peeking? Is it good or evil in disguise or a bit of both? And how does this adaptive cursor sharing thing work?

An Alternative To Star Transformations: Spiny Starfish -
Uploaded on October 05, 2011
For a variety of reasons an automatic star transformation plan may be unavailable when you are assembling a selection from a fact table and its associated dimensions and perhaps some additional ornamentation. Before bitmap indexes and star transformations existed in Oracle, I found that you could routinely get a less costly result by assembling a rowid spine filtered according to tables and lists and then using that spine to drive the assemblage efficiently. A Jonathan Lewis blog about emulating star transformations when something blocked getting them automatically from the cost based optimizer (CBO) rekindled my interest in rowid spines. This led to an email conversation and experiments about how to generate a rowid spine on the fly as a star transformation alternative that is generalizable and tidy. My attempts to bend the CBO to my will without any hints at all failed, but Jonathan was able to devise succinct hints to routinely generate consistent plans for the query patterns that generate rowid spines likely to provide optimal performance. Jonathan also noted that for certain editions of Oracle star transformations are not included in the available feature list, so this method may have broader appeal than simply as a workaround that in theory future improvements to the CBO could obviate. I think in many cases the resulting structure provides superior clarity in the meaning and correctness of the query. This presentation extends the considerations beyond what is plausible for a blog post and suggests ways that what I now call “Spiny Starfish” plans may be useful.

Automatic Test Data Generation For an 11g Database – A Case Study and Demo -
Uploaded on September 09, 2010
This paper presents a technique to automatically generate and populate test data in desired tables of a schema. It is very desirable to have test/UAT databases populated with large quantity data, with end-condition values, and with proper referential integrity. It discusses what all DBA dictionary views are used to generate data. It also describes how to generate data for columns accepting only valid codes/values. The modular design makes it easy to extend and customize.
